Documentary Photography: Youth, Culture, Me, You, Us
The period of transition from childhood to adulthood can be romanticized for its limited freedom and the persistent yearning for a sense of belonging. Nevertheless, in certain cultures, self-expression may be deemed dishonourable due to the strict adherence to traditional values.

Growing up in such a society meant conforming to maintain the essence of its collectivist culture, resulting in feelings of repression. As a result, the desire for independence and authenticity can be overwhelming, but the fear of losing oneself can be paralyzing.

My friends and I found ourselves drawn to various subcultures in an attempt to find our place in the world — navigating between so-called eastern and western perspectives and ways of being. We adopted a variety of cultural aspects and interests while still holding on to our own, creating a fluid and undefined sense of identity.

We were raised on religion, strict moral values, the patriarchy, the internet, class division, but most importantly a strong sense of community that taught us to value our shared humanity. My friends and surroundings will always remain my biggest source of inspiration.

Youthful, troubled, strict, vulnerable, humorous and resilient — the real embodiment of the chaos and beauty this existence embodies.
